Where is the design?

There are two main methods of embroidery.

These are using a pre-printed outline or a counted thread pattern. Your choice depends on personal preference and the specific project requirements. Both methods have advantages and will ensure you create beautiful, precise embroidery.

Pre-Printed Outlines

If you purchase an embroidery kit or pattern with a pre-printed outline on the fabric, you can simply stitch over the lines or fill in the spaces between them.

These outlines are actual size, so you can easily see how the design will fit and ensure proper proportions.

Many pre-printed patterns come with stitch recommendations, taking the guesswork out of the process.

But what if you're feeling creative? Go for it! Use your favourite stitches to bring the design to life. And don't worry if you're not an artist; you can always trace the outlines I will provide and transfer them to the fabric.

Needlework techniques that are worked in this manner include: 

Counted Thread Charts

Alternatively, you can follow a counted thread pattern, which uses a chart with symbols representing each stitch. The chart shows the fabric's thread lines, with the center marked ready for you to start stitching.

Stitching over a set number of fabric threads can help achieve more evenly sized stitches, but good tension and careful counting are also important.

To create a smaller overall design using the counted thread method, you can choose a more closely woven fabric with a higher thread count (more threads per inch). This way, you can fit more stitches into the same physical area, giving you more design flexibility.
